Lancashire Rural Futures

Lancashire and Westmorland Hedgelaying Association

The Lancashire & Westmorland Hedgelaying Association have since 2000 been trying to encourage the practice of hedgelaying particularly in the traditional local style.

Backs Bottom Farm

This is a hill farm with sheep and some fruit trees including traditional English apple varieties. The farm has a “camping barn” located on the site. Also on site is a small training barn. There is a renewable energy electricity system.

Clough Bottom Farm

Clough Bottom Farm is a working organic beef farm, which over has expanded through diversification to include a tree nursery, grazing for horses, three holiday cottages and a training centre.

This is diversification of a farm business. Claytime Ltd is a new venture as a firearms dealership offering repairs, training on shooting ranges and in gun handling and clothing accessories.

This is a farm which also has a groundwork and landscaping business and has further diversified into operating an equine livery yard offering some instruction on horse riding.

Meadowcroft Dairy

This is a 455 acre dairy farm milking 400 cows. The farm rears its own youngstock and grows maize to feed the cows. In addition the farm has a chicken unit on site. The farm bottles its own milk off site currently and has a distribution business for milk, eggs, chicken and other products.

Horton Grange Farm

This is a farm rearing pedigree cattle. A wind turbine and battery system has been installed to generate and store electricity.

Thornton Hall Farm

The farm has taken on rare breeds of animals such as the ancient British breed of “White Park” Cattle. The owners have converted the buildings into extensive animal display areas which allow good viewing of the animals and have built a new tearoom and education room.

Startifants Farm

This is a beef and dairy farm with a butchers retail outlet based in Chipping. The retail butchers business sells beef and dairy from its own and other local farms, the pork is sourced through Bowland Forest Food Co-operative farmers group.

Higher Spen Farm

This is a beef and sheep farm, the owners have had an interest in horses for a number of years and have stabled and grazed horses on the farm. Jane is trained in the management of horses including artificial insemination.

Farm Plastic Recycling

Farm Plastics Recycling was a farm based diversification scheme and supplies bins to farmers to store waste plastic. The waste is then collected brought to a central point, and taken to a recycling plant in Dumfries.

Hall Trees Farm

Hall Trees Farm comprises 60 acres of farmland and 600 lambing sheep. Robin decided to purchase a portable sheep shower a few years ago and now has an established sheep shower contracting business.

Lower Fairsnape Farm

Lower Fairsnape Farm is a farm SME which has already put 83% of its land into stewardship or woodland management and a large part of this is to encourage breeding birds. New wetland areas have been created and the farm is established as an important hot spot from breeding Lapwing, Redshank, Curlew and Snipe.
