Heywoods butcher shop has traded since 1964 and in order to source animals locally also runs a small rural abattoir.
Animal by-products must be either incinerated or rendered before it can go to landfill. The waste at Heywoods was subsequently stored on site in sealed skips before being removed by a licensed haulier for incineration off site. However, several problems occurred as a result. Firstly, regardless of good management practices, there was an odour problem and the site was an eye-sore for the members of public using the near-by bridleway. Secondly, the removal of the waste required these smelly skips to be driven through the area, and as small operator the collection service was sometimes intermittent leaving the waste to fester in hot weather. Ian therefore decided to buy a small-scale incinerator to be used on site. This incinerator has proved to be a sound investment for the Heywoods, not only financially but also environmentally. It now means that prolonged storage of waste after the animals are killed or butchered is avoided, there is no odour, no flies, no unsightly skips and the waste is dealt with immediately.
